The Tea Boy of Gaza

(BBC, 2006)

"This just might be the most eye-opening, unforgettable documentary you will see this year."

Filmed over two months in the wake of Hamas’s shock electoral victory in Gaza, this multi-award winning film focuses on Al Shifa, the biggest hospital in the Gaza strip.

As inter-factional fighting rages between Hamas, Fatah, and a myriad of rival factions, a doctor, a nurse and a tea boy all struggle for survival in the hospital corridors and car parks. But when Hamas militants kidnap Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, the tentative ceasefire with Israel collapses, and Al Shifa becomes the eye of a huge international storm.

The film won three international awards (including the Foreign Press Association “Journalist of the Year”), and was broadcast in America, Israel and across the Arab world.

“Neither a polemic nor a political diatribe… [This film] is intensely personal and deeply moving, and yet it has the cool, detached objectivity that defines the best news documentaries. This just might be the most eye-opening, unforgettable documentary you will see this year.” Alex Strachan, Canadian National Post.

“A thoughtful and, at times heartbreaking, tale of strength in appalling circumstances.” The Observer, Pick of the Day

“Utterly compelling.” The Sunday Times, Pick of the Day
